About the Mt. Lebanon Band Program
The Mt. Lebanon School District offers instruction on band instruments beginning in 4th grade. Students are given small group instruction and ensemble experience in the elementary years, and then move on to the middle and high school programs where their ensemble education continues. The Mt. Lebanon band program enjoys a great reputation, not only locally, but also statewide and nationally. Students participate in Pennsylvania Music Educators Association festivals, such as District, Region, State, and Honors Ensembles. Mt. Lebanon students have also performed in National Honors Ensembles such as the All-Eastern Festival, and the Music for All National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis. The eighth grade bands participate in an annual adjudication festival and are rated according to national and state standards in music education, where they have consistently received Superior ratings.
In April 2015, the Mt. Lebanon High School Wind Ensemble performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The Wind Ensemble also performed at the 2013 PMEA State Music Conference in Erie. The Wind Ensemble, chosen from nearly 100 submissions, was one of three Pennsylvania high school wind bands chosen to perform at that conference. The Wind Ensemble was recently invited to perform at the 2017 Music For All National Festival in Indianapolis.
Proud of their long-standing tradition of marching and musical excellence, the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devil Marching Band is the largest co-curricular activity in the Mt. Lebanon School District. Recognized nationally, the Blue Devil Band is a seasoned traveler and has appeared in many televised events, such as the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade, the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl, the Toyota Gator Bowl, the Outback Bowl, and the Liberty Bowl, as well as numerous music festivals where they have received superior ratings. The Blue Devil Marching Band is a repeat performer at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Locally, the Blue Devils are proud to perform for the Pittsburgh Steelers, at Light-Up Night, for the Mt. Lebanon Pumpkin Patch Parade, the Bloomfield Citizen’s Council Halloween Parade, the Kennywood Fall Fantasy Parade, and the South Hills Memorial Day Parade. The Blue Devils host their own band festival each year and are a crowd favorite at many other local festivals. And for the past two years, the Band participated in the Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup Parade!
After high school, a number of Mt. Lebanon band students go on to participate in music in colleges and universities, either as dilettante performers or as students majoring in music. Many Mt. Lebanon alums getting music degrees have become outstanding music educators, music technicians, and performers. Many other Lebo Band Alums perform in their college marching bands and other music ensembles and in community bands and orchestras even after college. It is our sincere hope and goal that all students take with them a lifelong appreciation of music.
